German Sand Sculpture Award 2007 goes to Gianni Schiumarini

The exceptional Italian carver Gianni Schiumarini won the German Sand Sculpture Award 2007. His sculpture “Hole in Paradise” displays an incredibly likable rat in a pile of giant cheese cubes and convinced all five prominent members of the jury to award the architect from Bologna. They faced a tough decision looking at the exhibits created by the 15 competing artists under the “Welcome to Paradise!” theme. Jury members Barbara Philipp, actress, former “Tatort” superintendent Jochen Senf alias Max Palü, RadioEins host Sven Oswald, SANDSATION co-founder Johanna Burmeister and ZIBB host Harald Pignatelli used three criteria to identify their favourites. They rated the idea of the motif as well as the artistic and technical realization. Convincing in all aspects was Gianni Schiumarini, architect from Bologna. His exhibit in Berlin demonstrates that common clichés of paradise might be too limited. In any case, this rat seems to have its very own ideas… . RadioEins host Sven Oswald explains his personal reasons for choosing the Italian’s sand sculpture were the “humorous idea, virtually perfect realization and vigorous attention to detail”.
